“Dream Tower”
Description:
This photograph captures Haystack Rock (Chief Kiawanda Rock) at Cape Kiwanda during pre-dawn light on the Oregon Coast from Tierra Del Mar. The pastel gradient is produced by the Earth’s shadow and the Belt of Venus, creating soft hues of purple, blue, and orange above the Pacific Ocean. A small dory boat provides scale.
Story:
The soft predawn colors along the Oregon Coast often resemble a dreamsicle, and on this morning those hues seemed to stretch endlessly above the horizon. While working on my abstract photography, I noticed how the gentle light paired beautifully with Haystack Rock. The moment was a happy coincidence, one I had not planned to capture.
To give the image a more artistic feeling, I broke a conventional compositional rule by placing the rock near the bottom of the frame. The result is a tower of color rising above it. A small fishing boat, likely a dory, rests faintly to the right of the rock, offering a sense of scale that reveals just how massive Haystack Rock really is.
It was early summer, and the angle of the sun filled the sky with a wide band of color ranging from purple to blue to orange and yellow. The combination of those hues and the gentle morning light created a scene that feels almost edible.
This photograph was created only two hours after “Chief’s Galaxy,” my image of the Milky Way soaring over Haystack Rock that I photographed from the sand dune at Cape Kiwanda. It was a magical day that also happened to be America’s 243rd birthday. After creating this photograph, I was more than ready for a long nap.
