“Doyles River Falls”
Description:
Doyles River Falls, photographed in mid-spring, is located in Shenandoah National Park. Reaching the falls requires a 3.4-mile out-and-back hike that typically takes 2 to 2.5 hours. With 1,184 feet of elevation gain on the return, it’s a moderately challenging trek for the adventurous photographer.
Story:
A three-tiered waterfall, Doyles River Falls cascades through the forests of Shenandoah National Park.
The hike drops quickly through dense forest, which of course means the climb back is anything but easy. The air was warm and humid that spring day, and the sky was filled with large, puffy clouds that alternated between bright sunlight and welcome shade. Even hiking downhill, I found myself sweating.
It was my first time in Shenandoah, and the differences from Oregon stood out immediately. Nearly every tree was deciduous — I could only imagine how spectacular this place must look in autumn. And the humidity was something else entirely.
A merciful breeze pushed the clouds across the sky and wicked the sweat from my skin. The falls would shift from sunlight to shadow in an instant. It was during one of those shaded moments that I made this photograph.
