“Delicate Arch Dawn”

This Entrada Sandstone arch in Arches National Park is one of Utah’s most iconic landmarks, drawing hikers and photographers seeking sunrise views of red rock formations, desert landscapes, and sweeping canyon-country scenery.

Snow-capped mountains backdrop Delicate Arch on a spring morning just before the first light of sunrise.
Coming to Delicate Arch this early isn’t easy. The path isn’t well marked, and you can’t simply follow footprints because large stretches of the trail cross bare sandstone. I was about to become hopelessly lost when I spotted a small group who clearly knew where they were going. Seeing no better option, I tagged along and tried making myself “useful” with some lighthearted conversation.
The reward for coming early was an arch free of the long line of selfie-takers who appear during the day and evening. Only a small group had gathered, and most were more interested in wandering around than crowding beneath the arch. Thankfully.
Instead of photographing from across the “bowl,” like I’ve done during sunset, I took the chance to move closer to the arch itself.
