“Delicate Arch (BW)”
Description:
Delicate Arch stands glowing in the warm light of sunset at Arches National Park. This freestanding Entrada Sandstone arch, framed by distant mountains and desert terrain, is a top subject for photographers exploring Utah’s iconic red rock landscapes and geological formations.
Story:
Moments before sunset, Delicate Arch radiates with an orange glow intensified by the sinking sun.
Around this time an interesting phenomenon occurs — not the glowing rock, but the behavior of the people visiting the arch.
Delicate Arch is a magnet for tourists. Dozens of people line up to pose beneath it, creating a long queue for selfies. This understandably frustrates photographers who are hoping for a clean, people-free shot during the best light of the day.
As the sun dipped lower, one irritated photographer finally had enough and bellowed, “CLEAR THE ARCH! CLEAR THE ARCH!” Others joined in with laughter and jeers, and the arch was cleared just in time for this photograph to be taken without anyone wandering into the frame.
I can’t imagine anyone needing to yell “CLEAR THE ARCH!” before the invention of smartphones and social media.
