“Cyclops”

Description:
Photographed during a climb up the Worm Flows Route on Mount St. Helens. At sunrise, the sun emerges from behind Mount Adams. Both peaks are stratovolcanoes in the Cascade Range and are popular for hiking due to their non-technical routes.

Story:
The sun rose over the north shoulder of Mount Adams as seen from about 5,600 feet on the south slope of Mount St. Helens in early spring. I was climbing with two friends, but my attention kept drifting east toward that massive stratovolcano rising more than 12,000 feet into the sky.

Dawn gathered behind it slowly at first, a soft brightening that pushed up the mountain’s spine. Then the sun finally cleared the ridge, sending sharp rays across everything not caught in shadow. For a moment I felt exposed beneath that sudden, focused light — as if the whole slope had been placed under a watchful eye.
