Description:
Cape Kiwanda’s sandstone cliffs take a direct hit from winter surf along the Oregon Coast. Formed from roughly 18-million-year-old sandstone sculpted by wind and waves, this Pacific City headland is part of the Three Capes Scenic Route and known for powerful storm seas.
Story:
A large swell smashes against the sandstone cliffs of Cape Kiwanda during a storm on a November morning.
The ocean rolled like thunder as it barreled toward the cliffs, where each swell burst upward in a spray of white water. Temporary waterfalls formed as the water receded. Birds scattered from the impact. Spectators gathered along the overlook to witness the ocean at full power.
I had come here specifically to see the forces of water meet sandstone — the browns and oranges of the cape contrasting beautifully with the gray-green Pacific. Not every swell produced a dramatic burst, so patience was required to capture the right moment.
As the storm passed, the light began to shift. When I first arrived, the sky was overcast and the distant coast range was hidden in fog. As the clouds thinned, reflected light turned the rain-darkened sandstone a bronze glow. Only later, when a brief shaft of sunlight broke through the clouds, did the scene align for this photograph.
Inspired by what I witnessed, I wrote the following:
Roaring swell,
Crashing spray,
Ocean crush,
Punch.
Sandstone breaking,
Battered coast,
Crescendo.
