“Cliffline”

Story:
Late-afternoon sunlight drapes itself over Bixby Bridge and the wind-carved cliffs of Highway 1, the unofficial gateway to Big Sur. From up here, the road feels almost weightless: a thin ribbon suspended between mountain and sea, carrying travelers along a cliffline built for wanderers and dreamers.

The landscape widens in every direction. No trees interrupt the view; no haze dulls the ocean’s color. Only the clean geometry of stone meeting water, earth meeting horizon. It is moments like this that explain why people come from around the world to drive this coast.

I spent a couple nights in Big Sur, free to linger and explore. This overlook was the final stop on my first evening before returning to camp. I have driven Highway 1 many times, but always as a long day from Monterey to Morro Bay. Slowing down changed everything; it made the familiar feel new.

Every journey into Big Sur begins with this view: a threshold between ordinary life and the wild edge of California.
