“Chosen One”
Description:
This photograph shows three Mexican fan palms in the Balboa Pier parking area of Newport Beach, California, with a rainbow appearing after a coastal storm. Newport Beach has lined its shoreline with palms since the early 1900s, shaping the city’s signature Southern California skyline.
Story:
A rainbow “chooses” the middle of three palm trees on an autumn’s evening at Newport Beach, California.
Even while on vacation, I feel the need to create and explore. I had spent the majority of the day wandering Disneyland and wanted to do something different, so I left the park and drove to the beach in time for sunset.
I thought there might be a chance for a gorgeous sky after the storm that had passed through earlier, something I could capture using Balboa Pier as a focal point. But as I walked from my car toward the shoreline, a rainbow unexpectedly appeared — as if summoned by the photography gods.
Immediately I began searching for something to complement it, but I was standing in the middle of a parking lot. All around me were cars, asphalt and… palm trees.
Noticing these three palms lined up by height, I shifted my position until the rainbow appeared to strike the one in the middle.
And the sunset I had been hoping for? It wasn’t anything I could photograph. The skies cleared completely, leaving nothing for the light to catch fire. A dud of a sunset, though the rainbow more than made up for it.
This was photographed during the same evening as “Rainbow Grove.”
