“Cherry Town”
Description:
Akebono cherry blossoms line Tom McCall Waterfront Park along the Willamette River in downtown Portland, Oregon. Planted in 1990 as part of the Japanese American Historical Plaza, the trees honor those unjustly incarcerated during World War II and symbolize peace, remembrance, and the enduring protection of civil rights for all.
Story:
Known as the “Rose City,” Portland is just as strongly associated with cherry blossoms in my mind. They’ve been a major spring attraction since they were planted the same year I was born: 1990. However, “Cherry City” is actually the nickname for Salem, Oregon, the state capital. So in the interest of keeping the peace, I’m calling this photograph “Cherry Town”, especially since the Old Town water tower appears in the frame.
My favorite time to see the blossoms is early in the morning on a workday. I prefer visiting places before crowds arrive, and this stretch of waterfront becomes very busy during peak bloom. In my opinion, these cherry blossoms are the finest display in the entire state.
