“Catching Light”

Description:
Deerfield Beach International Fishing Pier in Deerfield Beach, Florida extends nearly 1,000 feet into the Atlantic Ocean. Originally built in the 1950s and later reconstructed after storm damage, the pier remains a landmark on Broward County’s coast and a popular spot for fishing and sunrise views.

Story:
Sunlight breaks through the clouds and brushes the Deerfield Beach fishing pier with soft gold on a warm May morning in Florida.

There is something spectacular about a Florida sunrise.
Maybe it’s the thick, humid air that seems to hold color longer than anywhere else.
Maybe it’s the towering cumulus clouds that drift over the calm tropical water like floating continents.

Whatever the reason, dawn here feels different — slow, radiant, full of possibility.

As I waited for the sun to emerge from behind the clouds, fishermen at the end of the pier cast their lines into the quiet water. The sky shifted through purples and blues, then into oranges and pinks as the day gathered itself.

When the sun finally slipped through a gap in the clouds, its rays caught the edge of the pier and lit it with a clean, golden glow.

For a brief moment, the fishermen weren’t catching fish.
They were catching light.
