“Cape Kiwanda (1)”
Description:
This photograph shows Cape Kiwanda in Pacific City, Oregon, illuminated by sunset. The sandstone cliffs, offshore Haystack Rock, and surrounding dunes form one of the Oregon Coast’s most recognizable viewpoints. Taken during a rare quiet evening in early summer, the scene highlights the cape’s dramatic terrain and shifting coastal conditions.
Story:
It was the day before the beach would reopen to the public in early June of 2020, during the height of COVID-19 restrictions. Even though it was June, the number of footprints in the sand looked more like winter — a rare quiet for the Oregon coast’s summer season.
But I was racing against time. There were more people out that evening than I expected, and I needed a clean frame. After setting up my tripod and camera, I waited for gaps in the crowd. Clouds hovered along the horizon and drifted across the sky, and I knew the sun would remain visible for only a brief window. Its golden rays were already giving the sandstone a warm glow.
With barely a New York minute to spare, an opening appeared. I fired off a series of exposures, each one free of people, each one with a slightly different rhythm in the waves. Then the sun slipped behind a bank of clouds along the horizon, and the moment vanished.
Photography is full of instances like this, when all the elements align for only a few seconds. The combination of dramatic clouds and the unusually low number of footprints for that time of year makes this a rare photograph — a fleeting intersection of season, circumstance, and light.
