”Calkins Lane”
Description:
A farmhouse on Calkins Lane overlooks Adelsheim Vineyards in the Chehalem Mountains AVA of Newberg, Oregon. This hillside corridor is known for Pinot noir, volcanic Jory soils, rolling foothills, and classic Willamette Valley autumn color — a signature landscape of Oregon wine country.
Story:
A farmhouse on Calkins Lane overlooks vineyards belonging to Adelsheim Vineyards on an unusually warm autumn afternoon in November 2020.
Calkins Lane is a hilly two-lane road that crests, dips, and winds through vineyards at the foot of the Chehalem Mountains just west of Newberg, Oregon. Many people drive it to visit the wineries. But for others, like me, Calkins Lane is a two-and-a-half-mile bicycling paradise.
Riding a bicycle here gives you an intimate look at the vineyards that define this corner of Oregon wine country. That intimacy — being on a bike instead of in a car — is what allowed me to envision this photograph.
I waited until the conditions were perfect: peak autumn colors and a brilliant blue sky. Only then did I return to Calkins Lane by car to make this image.
