”Calkins Lane”
Story:
The Pottery and Farm Store on Calkins Lane overlooks vineyards belonging to Adelsheim Vineyards on an unusually warm autumn afternoon in November of 2020.
Calkins Lane is a hilly two-lane road that crests and dips and turns through vineyards at the foot of Chehalem Mountain just outside of Newberg, Oregon. For many, it’s a road that’s traveled to visit the various vineyards and taste their wine. But for others, like myself, Calkins Lane, is a two-and-a-half-mile bicycling paradise.
Riding a bicycle on this road is to get an intimate look at the vineyards that dominate this region of wine country. That intimacy, of being on bicycle and not in a car, was what allowed me to envision this photograph.
Only when the conditions were right – peak autumn colors and a brilliant blue sky – would I return to Calkins Lane with my camera and a vision.
