"Cachoo"

Description:
Photographed at the backside of Eye of the Whale Arch in Arches National Park, Utah, this image highlights the play of shadow and light across the sandstone. The natural shapes resemble a sea turtle reaching for a jellyfish, blending geological form with the imagination of desert light.

Story:
You see it too, right? The sea turtle reaching for the jellyfish?

I was 13 years old when Pixar’s immensely popular, Find Nemo, debuted in movie theaters. The cast of tropical sea life based in the waters off Australia made for the perfect family movie. A crowd favorite was the green sea turtle named Crush. One of his most memorable lines is “Coo-coo-cachoo, they find their way back to the big ol' blue."

My original intent for this spot was to photograph the Eye of the Whale Arch while visiting Arches National Park in September of 2018 after I had just finished teaching ESL in South Korea from August 2015 to August 2018. I didn’t know what I would find, but knew that solitude was expected as I walked the deserted dusty and bumpy 4-wheel drive road to the arch.
