“Bloomfront”
Description:
This photograph shows downtown Portland, Oregon, with the U.S. Bancorp Tower, KOIN Center, and Wells Fargo Center visible across the Willamette River. In the foreground, cherry blossoms bloom along Tom McCall Waterfront Park. The park was established in 1978 on the site of the former Harbor Drive freeway, with the cherry blossoms planted in 1990.
Story:
I’ve always liked Portland’s U.S. Bancorp Tower (Big Pink). It and the Koin Tower are buildings I always notice and enjoy viewing when I’m in the area. Some of my favorite views are from the Interstate 5 on the way back from either PDX airport or a road trip to Idaho. Those views defined my childhood.
On foot, you can get a similar perspective along the Eastbank Esplanade. Which is where I’m standing for this panoramic view. I got here by cross the Steel Bridge and walking another 300 feet south along the esplanade. I didn’t want a flat on view of the westbank because Big Pink was in harmony with the color of the cherry blossoms.
The waterfront has the best cherry blossom display in the state of Oregon. To me, it transforms itself into “Bloomfront”.
