“Benham Falls”
Description:
Benham Falls sits within Deschutes National Forest and is easily accessed by car from Bend. Dropping at a 22.5° pitch, these Class V rapids form the largest waterfall on the upper Deschutes. A well-used trail parallels the river, making this a popular destination for hikers.
Story:
The Deschutes River, the lifeblood of the region, cascades through Benham Falls on a chilly autumn morning in early October.
Timing here required arriving shortly after sunrise to take advantage of the shade cast by the trees. If sunlight spilled onto the river, the shot would be overwhelmed by the blinding brightness of the naked sun.
This morning, I had the place to myself. With the power of the 25-foot waterfall drowning out any other sounds, it was just me and the river. Not even my own thoughts could be heard.
Wind generated by the crashing water chilled the air until my hands began to go numb — how I wished I’d brought my gloves. I wasn’t used to the cold, not yet. Summer had been so warm, and autumn had followed suit, that I’d forgotten what it felt like to stand in the bite of a true morning chill.
