“Bay Rise”

Description:
This photograph shows sunrise over the east shoreline of Union River Bay in Maine, USA. The bay connects directly to the Union River, which flows through the nearby city of Ellsworth, historically a regional hub for lumber, shipbuilding, and coastal trade. The scene reflects the quiet maritime character that homes today enjoy along the shoreline.

Story:
The opportunity to photograph this view is compliments to Wil and Veena Gaines for graciously letting me stay in this shoreline cottage during my stay near Acadia National Park. I met Wil and Veena serendipitously while photographing the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse in Oakfield, Maine.

It took a little bit of effort for me to get out of bed in order to set up this panoramic (I’m not a morning person), but once I saw that the sunrise was going to produce an interesting sky, I sprung into action — frantically grabbing my camera from out of the car and rapidly setting up my camera without fumbling the gear.

For such a peaceful scene, my heart was racing as I scanned the shoreline. “There!”, I thought, as the tide had revealed a small grouping of rocks that lead the eye to Blue Hill Mountain (“That’s a mountain!?”). As the sunrise colors desaturated, I started to shiver in the cold, aware that I was still in my pajamas. Reminded once again that without photography, I’d still be in bed.
