“Autumn Lattice”

Description:
Champoeg State Park, along the Willamette River, is the site where settlers voted in 1843 to form Oregon’s first provisional government. Today the forest floor reveals a mix of native bigleaf maple and invasive English ivy, an autumn pattern shaped by the region’s history of settlement, agriculture, and ecological change.

Story:
Native bigleaf maples and foreign English ivy form an abstract autumn tapestry in the forests of Champoeg State Park.

Walking the riverside trail on a mid-November afternoon, I came across a stretch of forest floor completely covered in maple leaves. Their presence signaled the end of autumn, yet the scene pulled me in. Looking closer, the evergreen ivy peeked through the blanket of leaves, adding pockets of green to the ochre and gold.

Hunched over, I spent several minutes searching for a composition that felt honest to the moment, where the balance of green and yellow finally clicked.
