“Autumn Lattice”
Story:
Native big leaf maples and foreign English ivy make for an abstract autumn display in the forests of Champoeg State Park.
Hues of yellow and oranges from Oregon maple trees and shades of green from native conifers are the hallmark colors of autumn in western Oregon. But needles, when they fall, are rarely green. And ferns, native as they might be, rarely lay flat.
While walking along the riverside trail network of Champoeg State Park during a mid-November afternoon, I noticed the forest floor covered in big leaf maples. They shimmed in the sunlight. Taking a closer look, I noticed the underlying English ivy long planted decades ago by some of Oregon’s first pioneers.
