“Arabesque”
Description:
A lone Sitka spruce leans over the shoreline along the North Trail at Cape Lookout on the Oregon Coast. Cape Lookout State Park, established in 1935, is known for its steep coastal cliffs, old-growth forests and panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean.
Story:
This Sitka spruce leaning out by itself along the Oregon Coast has caught my attention several times while hiking the North Trail at Cape Lookout. I frequent this park because it lies so close to Pacific City and lends itself well to a quick hike or trail run.
The tree does not simply grow toward the light. It leans forward over the shoreline, its trunk angled toward the water, while its upper branches extend back in opposition. The posture reminds me of a ballet dancer, limbs reaching into space, drawn back to maintain balance.
I wouldn’t be surprised if this tree falls during an upcoming winter. Storms are fierce on the Oregon Coast, and it can only hold its pose for so long.
