“Anchor Rock (1)”

Description:
Part of the Cape Kiwanda State Natural Area on Oregon’s northern coast, this west-facing view was photographed just before sunrise. The sandstone cliffs of Cape Kiwanda have been sculpted over millennia by wind, waves, and rain. Located near Pacific City along the Three Capes Scenic Route.

Story:
Waves flow and churn through sandstone arches in the early morning light along the Oregon coast.

I remember this morning as if it were yesterday: clear, cold, and leaving me panting for breath. To reach this spot, I had to charge up and over the large sand dune at the southern edge of the cape. By the time I reached the top, my legs were burning.

As I caught my breath, I looked over the edge and saw the scene you see here. The tide was coming in, and waves occasionally swept over the rocks below. The sandstone cape, its jagged edges forming an arch above the frothing ocean, connected to a larger formation whose fractured sides had been chiseled by wind and sea.

In that moment, the headland reminded me of a ship’s anchor — heavy, weathered, and holding fast against the restless water, its arched base curving like flukes gripping the sea.
