“Wizard’s Light (1)”

Description:
Crater Lake National Park, founded on May 22, 1902, is Oregon’s only national park. The lake formed after the eruption of Mount Mazama roughly 7,700 years ago, an event 40 to 50 times larger than the 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption. At nearly 1,950 feet deep, Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the United States and eleventh deepest globally.

Story:
Photographed during the late afternoon near Rim Village on the Discovery Point Trail, Wizard Island’s presence dominates this section of Crater Lake National Park.

Sometimes when you visit a location, the best views are the most accessible. That was fortunately true here. Unprepared to snowshoe and camp along the 36 miles that circumnavigate the crater rim, I focused on this one composition near Rim Village and returned throughout my visit to observe and photograph the changing light.

Clear days are perfect for that kind of observation, and this day was no exception. Watching how sunlight moves across the landscape on clear days is like standing inside a sundial. Shadows elongate and contract. They point one way in the morning, then mirror themselves in the afternoon.

My favorite way to photograph landscapes is with a tripod because it forces me to stay put and watch. I like observing nature, and the camera gives me a reason to do that. Because I was traveling alone, I couldn’t stand in one spot all day, but the snow made it easy to find where my tripod had been so I could return to the exact same location each time.
