“Winter’s Edge”
Description:
Photographed on a climb up the Worm Flows Route on Mount St. Helens during blue hour, when the landscape glows in cool purple and blue tones. The view faces west toward a large ridge near the Monitor Ridge Route. Mount St. Helens remains a popular hiking destination thanks to its non-technical climbing routes.
Story:
As I climbed the Worm Flows Route on the last morning of winter, the landscape shifted into pure color and shape. I paused to catch my breath, checked my watch, and took a sip of warm green tea from my thermos. Sunrise was close. The world around me was settling into a quiet blend of purples and blues.
I dug my camera out of my pack and motioned to my friends that I’d stop for a moment. They continued upward while I set up my tripod on the calm, windless slope. Something about that stillness matched exactly what I was seeing — a ridge softened by blue hour, stripped down to the essentials.
This photograph reminds me of those rare moments when time seems to pause, and the line between what you’re witnessing and what you’re feeling becomes almost indistinguishable.
