You want a lens hood that’s large enough to give you the flexibility to move your phone so you can get the best angle without it coming off the glass!

Description:
Mount St. Helens viewed from a passenger plane approaching Portland International Airport from Vancouver, Canada. Formed roughly 40,000 years ago, it is one of the younger volcanoes in the Pacific Northwest. Its 1980 eruption killed 57 people and reshaped the surrounding landscape.
Story:
For my return trip to Korea in the fall of 2023, I chose Air Canada specifically for the northbound route — a flightpath that reveals every major volcanic peak from Mount Hood to Mount Baker. I wanted that aerial corridor, the one where the Cascades line up like a spine running through the Pacific Northwest.
The timing on the return flight couldn’t have been better. Evening light slipped across the range, and one of my favorite volcanoes came into view: Mount Saint Helens, striking even from 30,000 feet.
To photograph it cleanly through the window, I used an app that let me shoot in RAW, giving me the flexibility of a digital “negative” for editing later. I also pressed a flexible rubber lens hood against the glass — an inexpensive but incredibly effective way to block reflections from the cabin.
If you enjoy photographing from airplanes, I can’t recommend that lens hood enough.
