“Wind River”
Description:
The Wind River winds through the badlands of Carson Draw near Dubois, Wyoming, beneath stormy spring skies. Layered sedimentary cliffs, sagebrush steppe, and high-desert grasses define this stretch of Highway 26, offering a dramatic roadside vantage of Wind River Country’s geology, watershed, and rugged landscapes on the route toward Grand Teton National Park.
Story:
The Wind River meanders in front of the badlands east of Dubois, Wyoming, on a storm-filled spring day.
Photographing from the side of the road with barbed wire inches from my camera and tripod, I had pulled a U-turn to come back to this spot while driving from Fort Collins toward Grand Teton National Park.
This was one of those rare, inspiring moments an artist hopes to stumble upon — completely off-the-cuff and unexpected. When I drive, I’m always scanning for something interesting, and this section of Wyoming didn’t disappoint.
Cars were zooming by on Highway 26, only twenty feet behind me, yet I still found myself drifting into thought as I worked. In summer, this landscape would likely be sun-baked and brown, but spring had transformed the desert grasses into a vibrant green. A small seasonal window, caught at just the right moment.
