“Visitation”
Description:
A rainbow forms over the Pacific Ocean between Haystack Rock and Cape Kiwanda during a winter sunrise. Photographed in Pacific City, Oregon, this beach is known for surfing, whale watching, and dory fishing. It sits along the Three Capes Scenic Route, roughly halfway between Tillamook and Lincoln City.
Story:
A double rainbow appeared one morning at Pacific City when the perfect mix of sun, clouds, and rain collided during high tide. The light was shifting quickly, and each minute changed the intensity of the colors. With every passing moment, the arches grew stronger, then fainter, then stronger again.
Rainbows can be fickle to photograph. Sometimes they form complete arcs that stretch from one end of the horizon to the other, like a peacock displaying its full plumage. Other times they reveal only a partial curve, a quiet suggestion of the larger circle hidden in the sky. Their beauty lies in that unpredictability. You cannot schedule a rainbow; you can only be ready when one appears.
Whenever I see one, I think of what it represents. A rainbow often arrives after a storm or a burst of rain, and with it comes a sense of calm — a soft reminder that the sky has decided to brighten again. There is something almost uplifting in that moment. It feels like a message from above telling you that the day is shifting toward something better.
For me, photographing a rainbow is not just about capturing its shape or its colors. It is about preserving the feeling that arrives with it. Awe. Hope. Renewal. The sense that, even briefly, the world is offering a promise.
