“Vapor Mountain”

Description:
Photographed in October over Oregon, this image shows towering cumulus clouds building against a clear blue sky. The soft light and changing textures mark the return of autumn weather, revealing the quiet power and depth of Pacific Northwest skies after months of dry summer air.

Story:
Dynamic weather in Oregon makes a return in the fall after producing continuous clear skies throughout the summer. I’m an Oregonian born and raised here and fall is my favorite season for the contrast it provides to the endless summer weather.

While taking a walk with my camera after lunch in the neighborhood, I was on the lookout for interesting clouds while burning calories. Earlier in the year, during a road trip back east had sparked inspiration for photographing clouds.

What I enjoy most about cumulus clouds is how quickly they form — their image shapeshifting with motion that feels animated. When deciding where cloud photography should be placed in my landscapes, I thought of mountains. Like their rocky counterparts, cumulus clouds extended thousands of vertical feet upwards, creating a summit where only planes and imagination can reach.
