“Tree of Life”

Description:
A cottonwood becomes the subject in the rolling wheat country of the Palouse seen from Steptoe Butte, a 3,612-foot quartzite butte rising above eastern Washington. Formed by ancient geological uplift and later shaped by wind-blown loess, the region’s smooth hills create one of the most distinctive agricultural landscapes in North America.

Story:
Late afternoon sun accentuates the rolling hills of the Palouse as seen from the southwestern face of Steptoe Butte.

The magic here appears when the sun approaches the horizon just before sunset. Shadows grow long, and the hilltops glow with golden light.

That warm sunlight brushes the side of your face as you bring your eye to the viewfinder and settle into the composition. The air is clean, filling the lungs with the sweetness of wildflowers and cut grass. Songbirds chirp their final notes before roosting as the day winds down.

The passage of time becomes visible in the rapidly stretching shadows and the gradual fading of the light. One tree, a cottonwood, nourished by a meandering ditch, seems to bask in that glow — savoring the moment before the earth becomes still again. It became the central character in this pastoral scene capture through my camera.

This is the stuff of life.
