“Totality 2024”

Description:
This photograph shows the April 8, 2024 total solar eclipse as viewed from Maine during totality. The event marked Maine’s first total solar eclipse since 1963 and was the second total solar eclipse visible in the United States this century.

Story:
Witnessing a total solar eclipse is an out-of-body experience. Religious. Spiritual. Awesome. If you’ve seen one, you know. If you’ve only seen a partial eclipse or 99% of totality, then you don’t. You just don’t.

After witnessing the April 8th, 2024 total solar eclipse in Maine, I asked everyone I met over the next few days if they had seen it. Each person said yes — but I could tell who was telling the truth by the look in their eyes. Those who had stood in the path of totality had a sparkle in their eyes and excitement in their voice. Those who saw only 99% were nonchalant.

Yet everyone claimed they had seen totality. I can only assume it’s because the news repeated the phrase “total solar eclipse” over and over again, just like it did in 2017. So people believed that whatever they saw — even if it wasn’t totality — was the real thing.

I don’t believe for a second that anyone who truly witnessed totality walked away unchanged.
It is one of the greatest natural wonders of the world.
