“Tide Pool Morning”
Description:
At Cape Kiwanda in Pacific City, Oregon, sunrise reveals the tide pools as waves recede and the first light catches the sandstone cape and Haystack Rock. This summer morning scene shows exposed marine life, calm surf, and reflective water, capturing the rare beauty of an exceptionally low tide on the Oregon Coast.
Story:
As dory boats worked the channel between the rock and the cape, the tide pools of Cape Kiwanda slowly revealed themselves on a summer morning in 2019. The sky was scattered with small clouds that caught the first light of day, and the waves were calm enough to leave a shimmer of water reflecting the cape.
Freshly exposed mollusks dripped with seawater, and tiny crabs rushed to find shelter before the light grew stronger. I could feel the tide dropping quickly. Today it would fall exceptionally low, uncovering parts of the shoreline that remain hidden most of the year.
For the moment, the tide pools were quiet. Soon, outside visitors would arrive. But just then, the place belonged entirely to the morning.
