“Tide Pool Galaxy”

Description:
Cape Kiwanda’s sandstone cliffs and tide pools frame Chief Kiwanda Rock under a moonlit summer sky. Located on the Oregon Coast in Pacific City, this area is shaped by constant wave erosion and shifting tides. On clear nights, minimal light pollution allows stars and the Milky Way to appear above the Pacific Ocean.

Story:
Moonlight from a waning gibbous moon adds illumination as the Milky Way aligns behind Chief Kiwanda Rock.

While I couldn’t see very well in the dark, my camera could. It picked up even the most subtle traces of light. Sunset had occurred four hours earlier, yet a faint glow still lingered along the horizon during this long exposure.

I used a headlamp to make my way onto the tide pools as the tide retreated. It was one of the last remaining days of summer, and I found myself warm enough to endure the night without numbing my toes. By this hour, all the beach bonfires had burned out. I was alone with the elements.

The phase of the moon provided the foreground light. Unobstructed to the east and about seventy percent full, it gave my camera enough illumination without overwhelming the sky. The result was a landscape gently lit while stars filled the night above.

A fishing vessel on the horizon added an unexpected pinpoint of light, and the offshore marine layer introduced depth to the sky.

With gentle waves and calm wind, I quietly observed the land and recorded the light.
