“Tidal Vortex”
Description:
Water swirls through the tide pools at Cape Kiwanda in Pacific City as the ebbing tide pulls across sandstone shores and exposed rocks. This photograph captures the dynamic wave patterns and coastal geology that define one of Oregon’s most iconic marine landscapes within the Three Capes Scenic Route.
Story:
Water swirls around a solitary rock in the tide pools of Cape Kiwanda, pulled back by the ebbing tide. The ankle-deep surf tugged at me with surprising force, washing the sand out from under my neoprene boots. Even my tripod struggled as the ground shifted beneath it.
As with “Baker Beach Splash,” each retreating wave forced me to move, reset, and steady myself again. Yet there was something joyful in the push and pull. The water felt as if it were carrying away whatever stress I had brought with me, leaving only the simple rhythm of the tide and the pleasure of being out there.
