“Tidal Shift”
Description:
A wave fills the tide pools at Cape Kiwanda in Pacific City, Oregon, revealing barnacle-covered rocks and a shifting winter shoreline. This photograph looks toward Haystack Rock during an incoming tide, highlighting the coast’s constantly changing formations and the dynamic interplay between water, sand, and stone.
Story:
The tide turns as a wave washes into the tide pools of Cape Kiwanda. I worked my way backward from the far edge of the pools, watching for a composition that would frame Haystack Rock between the mollusk-covered stone on the left and the scattered line of rocks to the right.
Standing in the shifting water, I waited for a wave to rise just high enough to fill the space between them. These tide pools have always held a special place for me. I have explored them all my life, and they never look the same twice. Each season rearranges them, revealing and hiding details as it pleases.
Here, the ocean has the final word. When the tide begins to change direction, it offers a quiet warning. This way or that way, once the water turns, it is time to go.
