“Throne”

Summary:
This Cape Kiwanda photograph captures a pigeon guillemot resting against the sunlit sandstone cliffs of Pacific City, Oregon. The black seabird’s nesting nook contrasts with the warm coastal rock textures, highlighting the wildlife and natural geology of the Oregon Coast.

Story:
This fearless bird was nesting just ten feet above the ground during low tide. You can’t see it in the frame, but two feet below the bird — just beyond the bottom edge of the photograph — young couples have carved their initials into the sandstone, love notes etched into semi-permanence.

I used a telephoto lens and kept my distance so I wouldn’t disturb the bird. Pigeon guillemots rarely nest on the sandstone cliffs of Cape Kiwanda, which made this a solitary outpost. It felt as if the bird had claimed the entire headland for itself — a private fiefdom overlooking the Pacific, where visitors like me are only granted access when the tide lowers at God’s discretion.
