“Three Brothers (BW)”
Description:
This black-and-white photograph shows three of the Four Brothers sea stacks in Siletz Bay, Lincoln City, Oregon. These basalt formations, shaped by coastal erosion, sit near the tidal inlet where high tide creates reflective water. The stacks support coastal vegetation, including small shore pines.
Story:
On a cloudy morning, three of the formations known locally as the Four Brothers stood reflected in the high tide of Siletz Bay near Lincoln City. The basalt stacks are linked by shallow, rock-filled depressions, each carrying its own patch of vegetation. Two even support wind-shaped trees that resemble bonsai. A fourth brother sits just outside this composition, separated by the rising water.
The overcast sky and cool early light created a quiet, subdued atmosphere. A long shutter speed softened the incoming tide, turning the water’s surface into an impressionistic blur that loosely mirrored the formations rather than rendering them sharply. As I walked the shoreline, I noticed the reflections strengthened the closer I brought the lens to the water.
I lowered the tripod as far as I could, then I laid belly flat on the sand with the incoming tide only a few feet away. Every so often, a surge pushed into the bay from the ocean, distorting the reflection before the water settled again.
