“Thor’s Well”
Description:
Thor’s Well near Cape Perpetua on the Oregon Coast formed in volcanic basalt and functions as a natural saltwater outlet. With each incoming tide, waves pour into the opening and recede again, revealing the dynamic interaction between shoreline and waves.
Story:
Water pours into Thor’s Well during high tide on an autumn morning along the Oregon coast. This photograph was taken before sunrise, when the air was clear and the horizon was painted in pastel tones — the kind of colors that appear opposite the sun before it rises or after it sets.
Photographing Thor’s Well requires the right blend of tide and swell. Without enough force, the water won’t crash high enough to spill into the opening. With too much force, the entire area becomes dangerous. On this morning, the ocean delivered both beauty and risk.
While I was shooting, a wave larger than the others slammed into the land; its spray rained down like a sudden storm, drenching everything around me. I used my body to shield my camera from the salty spray.
For the final photograph, I waited for a wave strong enough to spill over the rock but not so strong that I had to duck and protect my gear. When it came, the water surged and fell, and I pressed the shutter — chaos layered over serenity, danger held inside color and motion.
Welcome to Thor’s Well.
