“Sweet Tooth”
Description:
Mt. Hood, Oregon’s tallest peak, was named in 1792 by Lieutenant William Broughton for Admiral Samuel Hood. Seen here from Panorama Point near Hood River, this view captures the mountain’s northern side, from one of the most accessible vantage points in the Cascade Range.
Story:
Mount Hood in mid-October with fluorescent pink clouds as seen just before sunrise from Panorama Point near Hood River, Oregon.
Using a telephoto lens, I zoomed in as close as I could to the mountain. Wispy white clouds stretched across the sky, and I knew they’d soon turn pink with the coming light. After driving 90 minutes in the dark from my warm bed to this cold overlook, I was relieved to see them.
I’d expected the sky to be clear, but I had never been to Panorama Point before. My plan was simply to scout the area before photographing autumn colors along Laurance Lake Road later in the morning — the real reason for making the trip. (See “Golden Guards.”)
The colors reminded me of cotton candy — that pink-and-blue swirl from fairs and ballgames — and Mount Hood, with its fresh blanket of snow, looked like a dollop of whipped cream.
