“Surfer’s Charge (BW)”
Description:
A winter surfer rides a breaking wave at Cape Kiwanda in Pacific City, Oregon. This black-and-white photograph captures the powerful surf, cold Pacific water, and rugged tide-pool coastline that make the area a favorite for experienced surfers. Morning light and offshore winds shaped perfect conditions for this Pacific Northwest surf scene.
Story:
A surfer catches a winter wave in Pacific City as the morning sun shines against a clear blue sky. The light was so bright it almost suggested summer. The tide was beginning its slow march back toward shore — I had been exploring the tide pools.
Just out of frame, black oystercatchers patrolled the tide pools. Their bright red beaks are strong enough to pry open stubborn mollusks, and their piercing “kleep” cut through the sound of the frothy water. Each crash of a wave sent a salty mist into the air like a brief, briny rain.
I waited among the rocks of the tide pool for the moment when everything aligned: a surfer riding a bucking wave and, at that same instant, another wave slamming against the rocks in front of me. The timing mattered, and patience was the key.
The surfers wore full-body wetsuits to brace against the bitter cold of the Pacific, committed to the chase even on a winter morning.
