“Sunbreak Barn”
Description:
Morning sun lights a red barn against the subdued spring hills of the Palouse. The region’s undulating landscape formed from deep deposits of loess, blown in during the last Ice Age. Today, these hills support longstanding farming communities whose barns, homesteads, and wheat fields define the cultural character of southeastern Washington.
Story:
A freshly painted red barn catches a rare burst of morning sun in the rolling farmland of the Palouse.
Clouds surrounded the horizon, and I wasn’t sure the light would ever break through. I stood along the shoulder of a two-lane highway, cars and semi-trailers rushing past, their wake lifting the hair on the back of my neck.
This particular spring had been disappointingly dry — the hills were more muted than green, a preview of the record-setting heat that would arrive in June. Still, the scene held its own beauty. The contrast between the storm-dark sky and the bright red barn was all I needed.
At last, the sun slipped free for a moment. Long enough to make the barn glow — long enough for the photograph.
