“Storm Pools (1)”
Description:
McPhillips Beach in Pacific City reveals extensive tidal pools during winter low tides, when wave action and runoff sculpt temporary depressions across the sand. This photograph documents the storm-shaped shoreline emerging between rain bands along Oregon’s dynamic northern coast.
Story:
McPhillips Beach turns into a cratered landscape in winter, dotted with shallow pools of seawater across the tidal flats.
Braving the bad weather to take advantage of these pools, I found myself completely alone. Dark storm clouds were dumping rain over the ocean, and I knew they would eventually reach the shore.
A strong wind whipped in from the water, carrying the smell of salt. With every step, the waterlogged sand shifted and sank beneath my boots. The storm had paused for only a moment, giving me just enough time to work.
Photographed during the same stormy afternoon as “Storm Pools (2).”
