“Storm Pools (2)”

Description:
Shallow winter tidal pools cover the sand flats at McPhillips Beach in Pacific City, Oregon, with Haystack Rock visible offshore. These seasonal formations result from storm-driven wave action and rapid sediment movement along the Cape Kiwanda shoreline.

Story:
Pools of water create a tapestry of texture along the Oregon coast, and McPhillips Beach is especially known for these pockmarked tidal flats during the winter months.

The beach is accessible by car, which often means tire tracks. But on a stormy weekday in the middle of winter, it is easy to find stretches of untouched sand. Seagulls wandered through the pools, and the storm had calmed for a moment.

Rain still felt imminent. I could see it sweeping across the ocean, drifting slowly toward the shore.

Photographed during the same stormy afternoon as “Storm Pools (1).”
