“Stepping Stones”

Description:
Basalt rock formations at McPhillips Beach in Pacific City are visible during low tide, with Haystack Rock offshore. Seasonal sand migration, wave action, and storm erosion routinely expose or bury these stones. The area is part of the dynamic coastal environment surrounding Cape Kiwanda on the Oregon Coast.

Story:
Exposed stones at McPhillips Beach guide the eye toward Haystack Rock in Pacific City. These same stones can disappear entirely beneath shifting sand in less than a year.

I returned to this exact spot five months later, hoping to recreate the photograph under different conditions. The stones were gone. I walked in circles, retracing my steps, searching for anything familiar. Nothing surfaced. They were completely hidden.

Had I imagined them?

“Stepping Stones” was made in winter, and I suspect another winter will reveal them again. It is a reminder of how quickly things change. Here today, gone tomorrow. That’s life, isn’t it?

Photographed during the same stormy afternoon as “Storm Pools.”
