“Siamese Echo”

Description:
McGown Peak, seen from the shore of Stanley Lake, is one of the most photographed mountains in Idaho’s Sawtooth Range. Located in central Idaho, the Sawtooths are composed primarily of granite and have been sculpted by glaciers, leaving behind the sharp ridgelines and alpine basins seen today.

Story:
Sunrise at Stanley Lake casts an orange glow on McGown Peak in the Sawtooth Range of Idaho.

Access to this spot was as simple as walking 50 feet from my tent — but only because of what happened the night before. When I arrived at the campground at sunset, every site was taken, and I had no backup plan for where to sleep. With light fading, it looked like I was in for a long and uncomfortable night.

I decided to talk to the camp host, hoping for advice. After hearing about my road trip and my plan to photograph the lake at sunrise, she offered me the small site beside her trailer — a space reserved for camp-host guests. She told me Stanley Lake was famous for its sunrise light, and that another photographer earlier in the season had stayed an entire week just to capture these mornings.

Her kindness changed everything. I went to bed in good spirits — not exactly sleeping well, more like a child on Christmas Eve — and woke long before dawn with a sense of anticipation. This was the beginning of a 10-week road trip through the western United States, only a couple of weeks after returning from three years teaching in South Korea.

That morning, the lake remained perfectly still. The reflection of McGown Peak held its shape like a mirror as the first light touched the summit. Standing there, I completely understood why someone would spend a week photographing this view.
