“Sentinel (2) (BW)”
Story:
This sitka spruce leaning out by itself along the Oregon Coast has caught my attention several times while hiking the North Trail at Cape Lookout. I frequent Cape Lookout due to its close proximity to Pacific City. It’s a great place to get in a hike or trail run.
Apparently this area is known for cougar sightings but I’ve never seen one. However, I photographed this in the evening shortly before sunset, which is around the time they are known to be active. But the only animal I was worried about were the mosquitos swarming around me trying to get a drink of blood. This spot happens to be near a creek that is mosquito heaven — usually I never notice since while hiking. You stay put when composing a photograph though.
I used the big guns for this shot because I was also photographing BAPstracts or Brendan Alex Phoenix abstract photographs (that’s where I use intentional camera movement to photograph sunlight reflecting off the tops of breaking ocean waves. See BAPstracts Store for more info). Anyway, I’m quite pleased with the results. Seeing this sitka spruce isolated against the water makes for a compelling subject.
I wouldn’t be surprised if this tree falls down within the decade. I find it interesting how its remaining branches tend to be on one side as if the tree is intentionally trying to keep itself from falling over.
