Description:
The John Moulton Barn on Mormon Row in Grand Teton National Park is one of the most photographed historic structures in the American West. Settled by Mormon homesteaders beginning in the 1890s, the area now sits within Grand Teton National Park, established in 1929 and expanded in 1950.
Story:
I couldn’t believe I was the only one photographing this fleeting moment of illuminated clouds above the famous Moulton Barn on “Mormon Row.” Where were the crowds from the morning, when the light hit the Tetons? Nobody could have predicted the clouds would glow. I almost missed it myself.
The sun had already set. I was only scouting the landscape for tomorrow’s sunrise, not prepared to capture anything worth saving, let alone adding to my portfolio. The wind, gusty for most of the day, had finally calmed. The nearby town of Jackson was packed with tourists escaping the historic flooding of Yellowstone National Park. It had been a chaotic day.
I was surprised to be alone, but grateful, because as soon as I saw the clouds begin to glow, I bolted to my car to grab my tripod. Nobody could distract me except my own clumsiness. My heart raced as I extended the tripod legs and set up my camera. Clouds only stay illuminated for brief moments. Within five minutes, the glow faded.
Catching my breath, I reviewed the images on the back of the camera’s LCD. Yes — I had captured the glowing clouds right before they disappeared. What a way to end the day.
