“Resurrection (2)”
Description:
The John Moulton Barn on Mormon Row in Grand Teton National Park is one of the most photographed historic structures in the American West. Settled by Mormon homesteaders beginning in the 1890s, the area now sits within Grand Teton National Park, established in 1929 and expanded in 1950.
Story:
The Mormon settlers who arrived in Teton Valley chose a location with a view that is nothing short of stunning. Their homestead, now preserved within Grand Teton National Park, has become one of the park’s most visited sunrise destinations. At dawn, the first light catches the jagged peaks of the Teton Range, turning them gold above the iconic John Moulton Barn.
I had attempted this photograph the morning before, but conditions were abysmal: strong winds and thin, fast-moving clouds that never cleared the peaks. With only two nights in the park before continuing east, I wasn’t sure if I’d get another chance.
Fortunately, the next morning delivered everything I hoped for. I arrived well before anyone else, coffee in hand, hopping in place to keep warm. The wind had finally died, which meant temperatures had dropped to freezing. No clouds. No mist. Just a clear, silent promise of a good sunrise.
As more photographers arrived, everyone formed an unspoken ring around each other’s compositions. There must have been thirty of us, yet the only sounds were birds and quiet adjustments of tripods and lenses.
All of that changed the moment the sun touched the 13,770-foot summit of Grand Teton. The entire group sprang to life. Shutters clattered in rapid bursts, echoing off the barn as the light cascaded down the mountain faces. I didn’t stop shooting until the barn and foreground were illuminated.
Reviewing the images later, this frame stood out immediately: a historic barn silhouetted against a mountain range carved by ice and shaped by sunlight.
It felt like a glimpse of heaven.
