“Reflections (2)”
Description:
Photographed during a calm low tide, this iconic view captures Cannon Beach’s 235-foot basalt sea stack, Haystack Rock, mirrored across the wet shoreline. The formation stands on the ancestral lands of the Clatsop and Tillamook peoples and remains one of the most visited natural features on the Oregon Coast.
Story:
Purple clouds rolled through as a storm cleared during a minus tide along a reflective Cannon Beach.
It was 2:30 in the morning. I had slept maybe two hours. My mind kept running through the itinerary: depart by 3 AM, arrive by 4:30, set up the camera no later than 4:50, wait for the sun to touch the clouds. A simple schedule on paper, but the weather is never guaranteed. The unknowns always keep me restless before a morning shoot.
This time, the conditions cooperated. Clear skies to the northwest allowed the sunrise to gently illuminate the clouds drifting in from the ocean. The storm had loosened its hold, leaving behind color instead of chaos.
With the tide at its lowest, the beach became a polished mirror. Cannon Beach’s Haystack Rock seemed to float between worlds, suspended in palatial skies of magenta reflected across the sand.
