“Rainbow Pool”

Description:
This Oregon Coast photograph features a colorful tide pool at Cape Kiwanda in Pacific City, with seaweed, anemones, and barnacle-covered rock formations in the foreground. Sandstone cliffs and sweeping dunes rise behind, while a rainbow arcs through the misty sky, capturing classic Pacific Northwest coastal scenery.

Story:
When the forecast calls for scattered showers, there is always a chance of a rainbow. Because it was low tide in the afternoon, this one formed over the land. In the morning they sometimes arc over the ocean, but winter light in Oregon sits so low on the horizon that capturing a rainbow from the tide pools at dawn is nearly impossible.

Exploring these pools has always been a joy. I have wandered through them since I was three years old, though I didn’t bring a camera into them until I was twenty-eight. The spot where I stood for this photograph is safe during low tide and cradles a pocket of water that shelters all kinds of small creatures.

A rain shower swept through just as I entered the pools. My camera stayed dry in my backpack while I climbed across the barnacle-covered rocks. When the rain passed and the sun began to break through, the faintest hint of a rainbow appeared and slowly strengthened. I moved quickly, pulling out the camera and setting up the tripod before the colors faded.

A fleeting moment, held still.
