Rainborn

Description:
Formed after a winter storm, this temporary waterfall descends the steep, green cliffs of Iao Valley State Park on Maui. The valley is both a place of immense natural beauty and a culturally sacred site, once a royal burial ground and the location of the 1790 Battle of Kepaniwai.

Story:
A temporary waterfall forms in the mountains of Iao Valley State Park.

Where does the water come from? What is its source?

The fog hides the summit, but the answer is written across the saturated, emerald slopes: rain — relentless, abundant rain.

All night and well into the morning, moisture hammered the mountaintops. The plants drank until they could hold no more. Then the excess gathered and slipped downslope, guided by gravity, merging into shallow channels that fed this sudden waterfall — a brief, beautiful pulse in the valley’s veins.

At the base, the water collects again, joined by countless others spilling from neighboring ridges, forming a river that winds toward its final destination:

The Pacific Ocean.
