“Pyramid Surf”

Description:
Pyramid Rock and its striped navigation light stand on the northeast shore of Marine Corps Base Hawaii at Kāne‘ohe Bay. The volcanic outcrop marks a popular surf break on O‘ahu’s windward coast, named for its pyramid-like shape noted by early military chart makers.

Story:
A surfer rides a break near Pyramid Rock Lighthouse on Marine Corps Base Hawaii.

The chance to photograph here came through a friend and his wife; access to this coastline is restricted due to the active military base. I had no way to previsualize the scene or scout it online. Whatever conditions I found would have to be enough.

I arrived the morning of my flight back to the mainland, with barely any time to search for a composition. The previous days on O‘ahu had been nothing but pouring rain and flat gray skies. This was my last window to make something.

Standing on the sand below the dark volcanic ridge, I watched sunlight finally break through the clouds, lighting the turquoise swell rolling toward the rocks. For the first time all week, it actually felt like Hawaii: warm air, moving water, color in the sky.

As I waited for a surfer to paddle into frame beneath the striped lighthouse, I felt the offshore breeze and the sun on my back — a brief moment of perfect timing in a place most people never get to stand.
