“Peekaboo”

Description:
Photographed at Cape Kiwanda on the Oregon Coast, this close-up image captures a colorful shore crab nestled among barnacle-covered rocks in the intertidal zone. The detailed textures and vibrant shell patterns highlight the resilience and beauty of marine life thriving along the rugged Pacific Northwest shoreline.

Story:
I have never been the type to pick up an animal that isn’t soft and furry. Something about the quick legs of insects and crustaceans has always unsettled me. I admire people who handle them without hesitation, but with a camera in hand I can get close in my own way, using the reach of my lens instead of my fingers.

Tide pools make that possible. Part of the joy is the discovery. Life hides in every crevice, darting and scurrying the moment you draw near. Our instincts tune in to movement, and these shore crabs know it. They sprint across the rocks until they find a pocket that feels safe.

For this photograph, I kept my tripod ready and my camera attached, waiting for a crab to pause long enough to be seen. In that small moment of stillness, I captured it.
