“Old Faithful”

Description:
The most famous geyser in the world, Yellowstone National Park’s Old Faithful is seen here erupting at sunrise. Named in 1870 for its relative predictability, the geyser erupts for 1.5 to 5 minutes and reaches heights of 130 to 184 feet. Intervals vary, but eruptions average roughly every 90 minutes.

Story:
Old Faithful Geyser erupts during sunrise in Yellowstone National Park.

I woke early — about two hours before sunrise — at my campsite in Bridge Bay near Yellowstone Lake. (I didn’t want to miss this.) Eating a PB&J in the parking lot at Old Faithful, I bounced on the balls of my feet to stay warm while boiling water for tea.

It was one of those crisp autumn mornings where your breath condenses, but the ground hasn’t frozen yet.

The crowds that usually surround Old Faithful were nowhere to be found at this hour, so I had the luxury of choosing my spot. After double-checking the predicted eruption time at the visitor center, I scouted the location for this photograph while keeping in mind that estimates can be off by quite a few minutes.

Old Faithful can erupt anywhere from every 44 minutes to every two hours. It’s never a question of if — only when. The only thing I cared about was whether it would erupt in time for sunrise.

A resounding YES.
